1) That part of the subsurface water that is in the zone of saturation.
2) Underground water supplies stored in aquifers. Groundwater is created by rain which soaks into the ground and flows down until it is collected at a point where the ground is not permeable. Groundwater then usually flows laterally toward a river, lake, or the ocean. Wells tap the groundwater for use.
3) The supply of fresh water found beneath the earth's surface (usually in aquifers) which is often used for supplying wells and springs. Because groundwater is a major source of drinking water there is growing concern over areas where leaching agricultural or industrial pollutants or substances from leaking underground storage tanks are contaminating groundwater.
