Septic tank

An underground storage tank for wastes from homes having no sewer line to a treatment plant. The waste goes directly from the home to the tank, where organic waste is decomposed by bacteria and the sludge settles to the bottom. The effluent flows out of the tank into the ground through drains: the sludge is pumped out periodically.
